Xbox 360 Error Message: "Connection Failed" when trying to connect to Windows Vista-based computer.

If you are getting an error message when trying to connect Xbox 360 console to Windows Vista-based Media Center computer, just check whether your computer is joined to a domain or is the Extender Certificate corrupted!

Let's identify the reasons for getting such errors.

Errors can occur if:
 
Your computer is joined to a domain where Group Policy settings are preventing the Xbox console from connecting to it.

     
   Or

The Windows Vista Media Center Extender certificate is corrupted.
Domain:

Now verify if Group Policy Setting is causing the connection issues.

Note:Confirm that your computer is not joined to a domain.

To check
Group Policy Setting do this:
  • Disconnect your computer from the domain temporarily.

  • Restart your computer and try to add Xbox 360 console as an Extender.

If your problem is not resolved then check whether Media Center Extender certificate is corrupted or not.
Media Center Extender certificate:

The Media Center Extender certificate needs to be removed if corrupted.Then uninstall and reinstall the Media Center Extender.
To  do this, follow the steps below.
  1. Click on Start

  2. In the Start Search box type mmc

  3. Press Enter

  4. Select File and click  Add/Remove Snap-in

  5. Click on Certificates option and then click on Add

  6. Now select Computer account and then hit Next

  7. Select Local computer, then click on Finish

  8. Click OK

  9. Open Navigation Pane > Console Root >Certificates

  10. Select Personal, click on Certificates

  11. Now right-click on Microsoft Windows Media Center Extender Host       

  12. Click on Delete option
Note: Now that you have removed the certificate, follow these steps to uninstall and reinstall the Media Center
         Extender.

Uninstall the Media Center Extender:          

  1. Start the Windows Media Center

  2. Click on Tasks

  3. Go to Settings option

  4. Now click on the Extender and select Xbox 360 console

  5. Click on Uninstall

After uninstall process is completed once again click on Extender and then select Configure option.

You will now be prompted for the setup key.

Follow these steps to reinstall the Media Center Extender:

  1. On the Xbox 360 Media Remote, press the Y button.

  2. Press the Windows Media Center Start button.

  3. Note the eight-digit setup key.
Return to the media center and enter the setup key to complete the Extender setup process.
