Windows Vista : Error message "STOP 0x0000007B INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE"

If you see the error message "STOP 0x0000007B INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE" when you start a Windows Vista-based computer after you change the SATA mode of the boot drive, then modify registry before anything else. Follow the instructions in this article to know how to do it.

Warning: Backup your registry before making any modification to registry. Remember, modifying or changing the registry can cause a serious problem to your computer. You may have to reinstall the operating system too. Microsoft cannot guarantee that this problem will solve. Modifying or changing the registry is at your own risk.

The AHCI driver should be enabled before changing the SATA mode of the boot drive.

Follow the instructions as listed, to enable AHCI driver:

  • Exit all Window programs
  • Click > Start
  • In Start Search, type regedit and press Enter.

  • Click Continue, if you receive the User Account Control dialog box.
  • On the left pane of the Registry editor select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Services > Msahci

  • While Msahci is selected/highlighted, right click Start in the Name column and select Modify

  • In Value data box, type 0 and click OK

  • Go to File menu and click Exit to resolve the problem.

This should help you in troubleshooting the error message problem.

Note: While installing Window Vista, unused storage drivers are disabled and system's startup process automatically speeds up.
When you change the boot drive to a driver that has been disabled, you must enable the new driver before you change the hardware configuration.

    YOU ROCK!
I've made it but in the oppose way. It doesn't start and the value in the registry were 0, so i turned it to "1" and then in bios i activated AHCI mode and my windows backed to life again!
    Thanks!!!!
