Microsoft's Windows Vista Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool

The Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool helps you to find out whether your existing router is compatible with Windows Vista’s advanced networking features, besides giving an idea of what features to look for when purchasing a new router.

A zealous home network user that I am, I am in doubt whether the current internet router’s capability will support some of Windows Vista’s advanced networking features…

Rest assured. The Windows Vista Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool (ICET) was just the right solution.  Found it interesting. It is designed to run on Windows Vista/ Windows XP operating systems on your home network behind a home internet router (NAT). The ICET supports certain technologies and verifies whether your existing Internet router supports advanced features, such as improved download speeds and face-to-face collaboration.

The ICET was supposedly an online test that can take up to 10 minutes, although for me it was more like just a couple of minutes. You simply have to agree to the license and have a licensed copy of either Windows XP or Windows Vista. Microsoft has even warned that the test could interrupt the Internet connection.

It performed a couple of tests on my router including a Basic Internet Connectivity Test, Network Address Translator Type, Traffic Congestion Test, TCP High Performance Test, UPnP Support Test and Multiple Simultaneous Connection States Test.

Note: If you require uninterrupted Internet access at this time (for example, if you are in the middle of downloading a large file, bidding on a time-sensitive Internet auction, or playing an online game), you should wait and do this testing at another time. For the most accurate results, your computer should be connected directly to your Internet router, using a wired connection.

The tests showed the router did not support the advanced networking features in Windows Vista, but helped me in giving a better understanding of what features to look for when purchasing a new router. I even got a detailed report of the test's findings.
