How to play popular multimedia formats in Ubuntu?

To know how to play some of the popular multimedia formats in Ubuntu, please go through the following instructions. Ubuntu comes with some default free software only and it might not support these formats straight away.

Ubuntu installs some default free software, which means that it doesn't support some popular multimedia formats straight away.

But there are some other ways to play the most popular non-free media formats like DVD, MP3, Quicktime, and Windows Media.

To know you can follow the instructions below.

Note: Try and avoid formats suppressed by DRM (Digital Rights Management, or Digital Restrictions Management), as they are often unplayable.

       
  1. Click on Applications, click on Add Remove.


  2. In the top right, change the setting to All available applications.

  3. Select Other in the left panel.

  4. Select the Ubuntu restricted extras package.
  5. Click OK.

To play most of the DVDs you will require libdvdcss2 package. This package is available using Medibuntu (Multimedia, Entertainment & Distractions In Ubuntu), its a third party package.
