How to customize the Taskbar/Panel on Ubuntu

Place the Panel on the top or bottom in a jiffy!

Ubuntu has a GNOME panel which will allow you to add or remove menu items.  Unlike XP, you can have more than one taskbar here.  You can also configure your Ubuntu with items that match with that of XP.  Here's how you do it:
  1. Deleting the bottom panel: Right-click over the panel and click Delete This Panel.

  2. Moving top panel to bottom:
    • Right-click on the panel, select Properties.

    • Change the Orientation to Bottom.

  3. Deleting menu items that you don’t need:  From your panel, right-click and select Remove From Panel.

  4. Adding to the main menu:
    • Right-click on the panel and select Add to Panel.

    • Scroll down to utilities, find Main Menu, click and drag and drop it to bottom left of the panel.

  5. Adding tabs: Select the window list under desktop and windows and drag it to the bottom.
