Error Message: “Access is Denied" on Windows Vista

You may get an error message saying “Access is Denied" when you try to access the 'My Documents', 'My Music', 'My Pictures', and 'My Videos' folders in Windows Vista.

After successfully upgrading your Windows XP system to Windows Vista you cannot access the folders given below. You will encounter “Access is Denied" Error Message.
%systemdrive%\Users\user_name\My Documents
%systemdrive%\Users\user_name\My Documents\My Music
%systemdrive%\Users\user_name\My Documents\My Pictures
%systemdrive%\Users\user_name\My Documents\My Videos

When files in ‘My Documents’, ‘My Music’, ‘My Pictures’, and ‘My Videos’ folders in Windows XP are transferred to the following folders in Windows Vista this error message pops up.

%systemdrive%\Users\user_name\Documents
%systemdrive%\Users\user_name\Music
%systemdrive%\Users\user_name\Pictures
%systemdrive%\Users\user_name\Videos
After up-gradation ‘My Documents’, ‘My Music’, ‘My Pictures’, and ‘My Videos' folders become junction points. Junction point is a protected operating system folder, which points to another folder. Junction point does not contain any data or other files.

You cannot access these junction points because Windows Vista sets the Read permissions of the 'My Documents', 'My Music', 'My Pictures', and 'My Videos' folders to Deny after up-gradation. You are redirected to the following folders if you try to access these junction points:
%systemdrive%\Users\user_name\Documents
%systemdrive%\Users\user_name\Music
%systemdrive%\Users\user_name\Pictures
%systemdrive%\Users\user_name\Videos
After upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista, Junction point default settings are:
  • Junction point attribute is hidden.
  • Junction point Read permission set to Deny.
  • The system will become unstable if you change these default settings.
You have to redirect links if 'My Documents', 'My Music', 'My Pictures', and 'My Videos' links in the Start menu do not point to the 'Documents', 'Music', 'Pictures', and 'Videos' folders.

Follow these steps to manually redirect these links to the correct folders.
  • Click .
  • You have to select 'Documents', 'Pictures', 'Music' and 'Videos' folders individually to redirect links. For example we are redirecting Pictures folder here.

  • Right click Pictures folder, and then click Properties.

  • Go to Location tab in Pictures Properties window.

  • Enter the correct target location in place of wrong target location.
    Change %systemdrive%\Users\user_name\My Documents\My Pictures to %systemdrive%\Users\user_name\Pictures.

  • Click Apply and OK.
