Sony 80GB PS3 to debut in Korea

We didn’t give much credence to rumors of a higher capacity PlayStation 3, doing the rounds for some months. Not the least did we expect it to be launched in any country other than Japan or the US.  In a surprising strategy, Sony has scheduled to launch the first 80 GB model of the PlayStation 3 in South Korea. Yes, you read it right. So, is Sony trying to take Samsung and LG head on in their home turf with this move?
A PS3 spec sheet posted on the official Korean PlayStation website confirms that the larger hard-drive-equipped machines will also come without the Emotion Engine chip - the PS2 processor that helped with backwards compatibility with PS2 and PS1 games.

No hint on whether the 80GB PS3 will be shipped to other regions have been made. Still, we can't help but think that this move bodes well for US consumers too; after all, the 80 gigger is already through the FCC, meaning that price drops and unimaginable storage space could be right around the corner.
The 80 GB PS3 will be priced at a pre-tax 518,000 won -- or just $556.
