Troubleshooting: Folder icon with Exclamation Point on my iPod
This indicates a software problem but it's nothing to get worried about.
The folder with and exclamation point indicates there's a software problem. This could happen when configuring the iPod, or if you disconnected it when it read "Do not disconnect", or sometimes software just goes haywire (who knows, it could have been a bad gravity day also). Either way, you just need to reload the software (get a clean version on the iPod) and that should clear up the problem.
Before you start, here are some notes:
Let's start:
Connect the iPod to your computer and you should get an alert message saying that your iPod needs to be either repaired or reformatted. Click OK or Update to launch iPod Updater. You can now Update or Restore the iPod.
If this alert message does not appear when connecting the iPod to your computer, try running iPod Updater first.
You can try the iPod Updater and see if it'll get it going again.
Before you start, here are some notes:
- You should really keep the iTunes/iPods software up-to-date (via Help > Check for Updates).
- People often update iTunes, but then don't go the extra step to update the iPod.

- When you loaded iTunes, you also load the iPod Updater (visible through Start > All Programs).
- If iTunes doesn't recognized the iPod, you may be able to restore it using iPod Updater.

- With the iPod not connected...
- Go to Start > All Programs > iPod > iPod Updater (folder) > iPod Updater (most recent date).
- Once the iPod Updater loads, it will prompt you to attach the iPod, do so.
- The iPod shows up:
- Update - if this is an option, take it! A load in of the new software may clear up the problem
- Restore - Although this'll erase all your tunes, it will also erase any software problems.
