iPod: Authorize/Deauthorize your computer before you service or sell it.

Deauthorizing a computer allows you to manage the computers that can play purchased music, videos, audiobooks, or other content. Always deauthorize your computer before you send it for repair, upgrade it, sell it or give it away.

Authorizing/Deauthorizing helps you to protect the copyrights on the content you purchase from iTunes store.   It allows you to manage and give permission to access and play music, videos and audiobooks etc. iTunes Store purchases can be authorized in iTunes, to play on up to five computers.

Note: Songs encoded in AAC format from other sources like your audio CD's excluding iTunes Store need not be authorized.

Here are the steps to authorize a computer to play purchased stuff using your Apple Account

  1. First, Select a song or any other purchase you made from iTunes Store.
  2. Click the Play button.

If the song plays, then the computer is already authorized, and if it doesn't play then iTunes will prompt you to enter the Apple ID and password you used to purchase that song.

Important:  To protect your purchase, ensure that you deauthorize your computer before selling or giving it away or when you are getting your computer serviced.

Here are the steps to deauthorize a computer
  1. Start iTunes.
  2. Go to Store menu, select Deauthorize Computer.
  3. Choose "Deauthorize Computer for Apple Account", enter your Apple ID and password.

If you are upgrading you computer components such as RAM, or hard disk or a display card, you need to deauthorize your computer.

To deauthorize all computers:

  1. Click iTunes Store in the Source pane.
  2. Sign onto your Apple store account.
  3. Click once again on the Account button, re-enter your password and click View Account.
  4. In the Account Information window, click Deauthorize All.
Note: You can only use Deauthorize all button once per year. This button will not appear if you have less than 5 authorized PC's or if you have used this option within the last 12 months.
