Improving the performance of Comcast Video Mail

The performance of your Comcast video mail is decreasing and you need to resolve the issue real fast! Read on....

The two scenarios when the performance of the Comcast Video Mail can decline are:
  • If your computer does not meet the minimum system requirements
  • If the DMA is not enabled
Lets check the computer minimum requirements:

  • Operating Systems: Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, XP
  • Processor Speed: 500MHz equivalent or better
  • Memory: 128MB RAM
  • Browser: IE 6.0 with Service Pack 1

Please follow the steps given below to check and enable
Direct Memory Access (DMA).

Comcast Video Mail requires that the Direct Memory Access (DMA) setting be turned on for all hard drives. Sometimes DMA may not be turned on by default in Windows 98 or ME. So if you are having problems frequently, make sure that DMA is turned on to ensure quality.

For Windows 98 and Windows ME:
  1. Right-click on the My Computer icon.
  2. Choose Properties.
  3. Choose Device Manager.
  4. Double-click on Disk Drives.
    Note: All of the drives on your computer will be listed. Look for the hard drive.Your hard drive will be the one that does not say either floppy or CD.
  5. Right-click on your hard drive.
  6. Choose Properties.
  7. Choose the Settings tab.
  8. Click in the DMA box.
    Note: A dialogue box entitled Unsupported Hardware Alert will appear, warning you of the possible side effects of enabling DMA.
  9. If you decide to enable DMA, press OK.
  10. Press OK again.
    Note: Press YES if you get a message stating that computer needs to shut down or restart.
  11. Your computer will now shut itself down.
  12. Restart your computer and you are now ready to resume using Comcast Video Mail

For Windows 2000 and XP.

Note: For windows 2000 and XP, DMA should be turned on by default. If not:
  1. Right-click on the My Computer icon.
  2. Choose Properties.
  3. Select the Hardware tab.
  4. Choose Device Manager.
  5. Double-click on IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
  6. Right-click on Primary IDE Channel.
  7. Choose Properties.
  8. Choose Advanced Settings.
    Note: Under Device 0, make certain that Transfer Mode is set to DMA if available. Do the same for Device 1.
  9. Press OK.
  10. If you have more than one hard drive you can repeat steps 6 to 8, by right clicking on Secondary IDE Channel. Otherwise close the Device Manager.
