Setting up Comcast High Speed Internet with a Linksys Router ?
Learn the procedure for setting up Comcast High Speed Internet with a Linksys Router.
Procedure to connect your cable modem to the Router
-
Try connecting directly your cable modem without router and check if you can get online.
-
Once you've verified that you can get onto the internet without the router please proceed. If you cannot, please contact your ISP for further assistance.
-
Now unplug the Ethernet cable that connects to your DSL modem from the back of your computer.
-
Take the connection that you just unplugged from the back of your computer and connect it to the WAN port of the router.
-
Take a different Ethernet cable and plug it into the port closest to the WAN port, or into the LAN port.
- Look at the front of the router. The following lights should be illuminated.
- Power
- WAN Link
- Link/Act (On the port that you connected your computer to)
NOTE: If lights other than Link/Act are illuminated on this port, that is normal.
You may have a few other lights illuminated depending on the model number router you have, but the 3 above must be illuminated for proper connection.
-
Hold the Reset button on the router for 30 seconds or more
-
Restart your computer

Without this, my computer could communicate with the router and the router could communicate with the Internet but the computer would not communicate with the Internet through the router. This host name had not been required when I previously had used this router with a Comcast regular cable modem or with a Verizon DSL modem but it apparently was to make it work with the telephony modem and the host name requirement was not evident until I ran the Linksys Wireless-G Setup Wizard CD that came with the router. When I ran the router setup and followed the instructions the setup gathered information from the modem, added a host name in the basic setup, enabled the MAC clone function and populated the MAC address with the physical address of my ethernet card like this article instructs. Once the setup was complete, I immediately was able to access the Internet from any computer hard-wired to the router as well as wirelessly.
