Transferring Photos to your handheld using "Send to Handheld Droplet"

You can drag JPEG and BMP images to the Send to Handheld Droplet and choose to install them to either the internal memory of your handheld or an expansion card. Here's how you do it.
Note: You must have the Palm Photos application on your handheld to view the images.
  • Open the Applications folder.
  • Open the Palm folder.
  • Locate the Send to Handheld Droplet.
    • TIP: For convenience, you may want to add the Send to Handheld droplet to the Mac OS X Dock by dragging the droplet into the Dock.
  • Locate the image(s) that you want to install on your handheld.
  • Select and drag the image(s) onto the Send to Handheld Droplet.
    • For Mac OS X users, a dialog box asks you to select the desired Palm username and destination.
    • For Mac OS 9 users, a dialog box asks you to select the Palm username, followed by a dialog asking for the destination.
    • Note: Images installed to the handheld's internal memory are scaled to 320x320 pixels and saved as a .pdb file compatible with Palm Photos. Images installed to the expansion card are saved as JPEG files.
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK when a dialog box reminds you that you must perform a HotSync operation to transfer the files to your handheld.
    • TIP: You can also transfer photos directly from iPhoto onto the Send to Handheld Droplet. To maximize the available viewing area on your handheld, use the iPhoto crop tool to create perfectly square images.
Transferring Audio Files to your handheld using "Send to Handheld Droplet"

You can install MP3 Audio Files onto your Expansion Card.
Note: To listen to MP3 Audio Files, you must have an application on your handheld capable of playing MP3 files from an expansion card.
  • Open the Applications folder.
  • Open the Palm folder.
  • Locate the Send to Handheld Droplet.
    • TIP: For convenience, you may want to add the Send to Handheld Droplet to the Mac OS X Dock by dragging the droplet onto the Dock.
  • Locate the MP3 file(s) that you want to transfer to your handheld.
    • TIP: If you are using iTunes, use the Show Song File command in the File menu to show where the song file is located. You may want to edit the file name and ID3 tags from your Mac because these cannot be edited on the handheld.
  • Select and drag the MP3 file(s) onto the Send to Handheld Droplet.
    • Note: You cannot drag files directly from an iTunes playlist onto the Send to Handheld Droplet. You must drag the original MP3 file.
  • Click OK after selecting the desired Palm username.
  • Click OK when a dialog box reminds you that you must perform a HotSync operation to transfer the files.
  • Insert a card into your handheld expansion slot and perform a HotSync operation.
    • Note: MP3 files can only be saved to the expansion card.
If your Palm Handheld has an internal camera, you can take pictures and store them either in your handheld's internal memory or on an expansion card (SD Card or MultiMedia Card). When you perform a HotSync operation, photos taken with your handheld's camera are backed up to your computer's hard drive as JPEG images. Images backed up from your handheld's internal memory are in a folder labeled Handheld, and images backed up from an expansion card are in a folder labeled Expansion Card. These folders are in the locations specified below, depending on which Mac operating system you are using:
Mac OS X Users - Home:Pictures >> Palm Photos.
Mac OS 9 Users - Documents >> Palm Photos.
Things to Note:

  • Only images taken with the internal camera are backed up.
  • Edits made on the handheld are not reflected on the backed-up version.
  • If you delete the original image from the handheld, the backup image remains.
  • If a newer image has the same name as a previously backed-up image, the new image is renamed with an incremental number added to the end of the name (e.g., Image2.jpg)
  • The default images in the Photos application on your handheld were not captured by the Zire 71 camera. Palm include them as examples to show you the quality and variety of images that you can transfer to and view in Palm Photos. Your images can be digital photos from a variety of sources including a digital camera, or photos scanned onto your desktop computer, or downloaded from an e-mail or a web site.
