Error Message on Palm: 'Error 1714. The feature you are trying to use is on an unavailable network resource.

Read this article to deal with 'Error 1714 on the Palm.


You may encounter this error message when you are installing a recent version of Palm Desktop over an existing one. Palm Desktop Installer checks the previous version's installer information before uninstalling the same.
You may also encounter this error message if your PC's Windows Installer Database has become corrupt and Palm Desktop uninstallation procedure is done manually using Add/Remove Programs.
If Palm Desktop employs InstallShield, the error message may request MSI. The MSI engine, an install service for Windows, contains some built in components of InstallShield. Occasionally, this may break or disappear, leading to the error.


Windows Installer Database damage can be caused due to various reasons.The most common one is accidentally deleting files in the Windows Registry or Installer Folder by running a disc cleaning device that deletes important file links. Irrespective of the cause, any of the following will provide you the solution.

Solution 1: Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
Solution 2: Windows Installer Service.
Solution 3: Edit the Registry.

Solution 1: Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
  • The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility helps in removing files and registry settings in the Windows Installer for Palm Desktop. Deleting this information solves the problem created by the existing Palm Desktop's corrupt installer database. Now, you can install the latest version of Palm Desktop without the error display.      
  • Note: To avoid multiple versions of Palm Desktop on your computer, make sure to install Palm Desktop on the same site as the older one after you use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.

  • After using the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, try and install Palm Desktop once more.

Solution 2: Windows Installer Service.

  • If Solution 1 fails, you need to check if the Windows Installer Service is present and running correctly on your computer.
  • The MSI engine is installed on your desktop by InstallShield used by the Palm Desktop Installer. You may need to manually install MSI if the process is interurupted. 
  • To manually install MSI, Click here.
  • After installing MSI manually,try and install Palm Desktop once more.

Solution 3: Edit the Registry.
Note: Instructions for Windows Registry modification are included in this section. Ensure that registry back up is available and you can restore the registry if a problem arises.

You have to edit the Windows Registry if the previous solutions failed to help you. Don't try the following steps if you are unsure, as this can damage your system if performed incorrectly. Consult a Windows expert to perform the procedure shown is below.

Before attempting to Edit the Registry, it is important to read and understand each step.

  • Click Start.
  • Select Run.

  • Type "regedit" and click OK. (without quotes)

  • Click "+" next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER.

  • Click "+" next to Software.

  • Click "+" next to Microsoft.

  • Click "+" next to Installer.

  • Click "+" next to UpgradeCodes.

  • Click the C4350F2398E4D9642B4420EB18230BF0 folder.

    •   You will find two sub folders in the "C4350F2398E4D9642B4420EB18230BF0" folder.
    •   One is a long string of numbers and letters, and one is labeled as Default.
    •   Click the folder other than Default. Don't click Default folder.
    •   Note down the value.
    •   Note: Your value will be different from the one mentioned in the image.
    •   Note: Don't change any values.

    •   Click "-" next to UpgradeCodes to close the folder.

  • Now you are back in the Installer folder.
  • Click "+" next to Features.

    •   Locate the folder by the value noted down.
    •   Delete folder.

    •   Click "-" next to Features to close the folder.
  • Now you are back in the Installer folder.
  • Click "+" next to Products.

    •   Locate the folder by the value you noted down.
    •   Delete folder.

    •   Click "-" next to Products to close the folder.
  • Now you are back in the Installer folder.
  • Click "+" next to UpgradeCodes.

    •   Locate the folder you saw earlier with the value C4350F2398E4D9642B4420EB18230BF0.
    •   Delete this folder.

  • Close the Registry window.
