Palm Error Message: "Error 1406: Could not write value Hardware ID to key"

Things to do when you encounter "Error 1406: Could not write value Hardware ID to key" error message while installing Palm Desktop software.


Based on your security settings, "Error 1406: Could not write value Hardware ID to key" suggests that you do not have administrative authorizations on your computer. To create registry keys, which are part of the installation process, you must have administrative authorizations.

You may see "Error 1406: COULD NOT OPEN KEY" error message instead. This error is different from "Error 1406: Could not write value Hardware ID to key."
Click here if you see "Error 1406: COULD NOT OPEN KEY." If not, go through the steps given below:


  1. Press Start and Select Settings.
  2. Press Control Panel.
  3. Double click on Administrative Tools in the Control Panel window.
  4. Double click on Computer Management in the Administrative Tools window.
  5. Double click on System Tools to enlarge the folder in the left pane of the Computer Management window.
  6. Double click on Local Users and Groups to enlarge the folder.
  7. Double click on Users to open the folder.
  8. Right click on your user name and Select Properties in the right pane.
  9. Press Add. The Select Groups window opens.
  10. Choose Administrators and Press Add in the Name list. The Administrators permission is copied to the lower pane.
  11. Press OK. The window closes. The Member Of box now includes Administrators. Press Apply.
  12. Press OK. The Properties window closes.
  13. Close the Computer Management window and the Administrative Tools window.

With administrative authorization, you should be able to successfully install Palm Desktop.
