Palm: Fixing 8009 Error Message.
You may encounter “8009” error message on the PC during a HotSync operation that indicates a problem with one or more entries in the Windows Registry.
You may encounter this error message due to four likely reasons and they are:
- Specific Documents to Go software (notifiers) installed in an incorrect location on the desktop computer.
- A non Microsoft MAPI.DLL file is installed on the desktop computer. This DLL may be installed by non Microsoft specific email clients. Outlook or Outlook Express Users are less likely to experience this issue.
- Chapura PocketMirror exhibited this error with earlier versions.
- Another 3rd party synchronization conduit may cause this 8009 error message.
You have to install HotSync Utility to address some of these errors during synchronization. Running the HotSync Utility application as instructed below will resolve most instances of 8009 error messages.
- Click here to download HotSync Utility.
- Follow the directions on the download page to uncompress the file.
- Launch HotSync Utility program and click Next.
- If any problems are found, below screen will be displayed.

- You should not remove unchecked items. If the HotSync Utility identifies ocpNotifier.dll for removal you can choose to remove it or follow the process in step specified below.
- Microsoft's FixMapi.exe tool will update your MAPI.DLL. You can see Microsoft Knowledgebase Article 228457 for more information on use of this tool. For Outlook 97/98 users should read Microsoft Knowledgebase Article 193681 before using this tool.
- If no problems are found, below screen will be displayed.

- Once the HotSync Utility has completed its scan, proceed to perform a HotSync operation. If the HotSync operation completes successfully, you are done.
Chapura's PocketMirror is the software that allows your handheld to synchronize with Microsoft Outlook. PocketMirror synchronizes with Microsoft Outlook's default folders using Microsoft's OLE Automation software. If PocketMirror cannot connect to Outlook's default folders it will return the Outlook OLE Error (8009) error message, or sometimes it will crash with an OLE32.dll or OLEAUT32.dll error.
The Outlook OLE Error (8009) or (800a) error was fixed in Chapura PocketMirror 3.1.7 and higher. To check which version of the software you are currently running, click here to see the Chapura FAQ. If you wish to retain your current installation of your software, click here to gain some information from Knowledge Base article.
Uninstall 3rd Party Softwares (non Palm):
- Uninstall any 3rd party software (non Palm) that uses the HotSync process to transfer information to your handheld.
- Click Start.
- Click Settings.
- Click Control panel.
- Double click Add/Remove Programs.
- Scroll down and select 3rd Party Software.
- Click the Add/Remove button to uninstall.
- Perform a HotSync operation after each instance of 3rd party software is uninstalled.
- Repeat the steps above until your HotSync operation is successful.
When the HotSync operation completes successfully, check with the developer of the software application removed just prior to the successful HotSync process for an updated version or support identifying the problem. Other 3rd Party Software should be reinstalled from the original disk(s) or file(s).Rebuild Windows Registry to resolve 8009 Error Messages:
If you still encounter 8009 error message even after following the above steps, then you will need to rebuild your Windows Registry entries for HotSync Manager. Continue with the procedure below.
Note: You are going to modifying the Windows Registry. Before you do this, make sure to backup the registry, and make sure that you understand how to restore the registry if any problem occurs. You can visit Microsoft Knowledge Base article 256986 for more information.
To rebuild the HotSync Manager Registry settings, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the Palm Desktop software. To completely remove Palm software from your computer, including the Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager from your computer, perform a normal uninstall of the software and then remove the Palm software entries in the Windows Registry. Here's how you do it.
- Close all open windows and applications.
- Click Start.
- Click Settings.
- Click Control Panel.
- Double click Add/Remove Programs.
- Scroll down and select Palm Desktop or Pilot Desktop.
- Click the Add/Remove button to Uninstall.
To remove Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager Registry entries, follow the instructions below.
- Note: The following steps need to be followed exactly or unexpected results may occur with your computer.
- Close all open windows and applications.
- Click Start.
- Click Run.
- Type "regedit" and click OK.
- Click on the word Registry and select Export Registry File.
- Set the directory where you are saving the registry file to your Desktop.
- Type in any name for the file, and make sure All is selected.
- Click SAVE, and verify that it has created a backup file on your desktop.
- Press the (+) sign next to the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER".
- Press the (+) sign next to "Software".
- If you see a folder called "U.S. Robotics", click the (+) sign next to it.
- Right click the "Pilot Desktop" folder and select Delete.
- Close the Registry Editor window.
- Restart your computer to ensure that the changes take effect.
When your computer has restarted, install Palm Desktop software from the original CD by following the procedure below.
- Exit any open programs, including those that run automatically at startup (such as Microsoft Office) and virus scanning software.
- Insert the Palm Desktop CD.
- If installation does not begin, click Start.
- Click Run.
- Type "d:\autorun.exe", and press Enter.
- If necessary, replace d: with the appropriate CD-ROM drive letter assigned.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation. During the installation, you may be asked to connect your handheld to the HotSync cradle.
- Perform a HotSync operation.
Note: Previously it was recommended to restore the registry settings by running HotSync Manager with the "-r" command ("HotSync.exe -r"). This is no longer recommended because it will restore an out-of-date set of registry entries. Instead, re-install Palm Desktop from the original CD.
