IPOD Mini 2nd gen comes us with unhappy face before displaying battery charging

My daughter spilled coffee on her IPOD Mini 2nd generation and now it comes up with the apple, goes to the unhappy face, and then to the battery charging display when plugged to a usb cable.  I took it apart and cleaned it the best I could but it still does the  same thing.  The hard drive and battery did not look dirty but the board needed cleaning.  Should I be able to hear the hard drive when plugging the IPOD in?  Holding the menu and select button in does not do anything except the display does flash ever so faintly after a few seconds but stays on the charging battery display.  The other diagnostics don't do anything either.  I suspect the hard drive but would like some way to confirm that.
