Basic setup guide for a DSL connection (PPPoE)

This article helps in setting up most of the DSL's using PPPoE

If you were using a USB Connection before using a router, follow these steps


1. Switch off the modem
2. Disconnect the USB cable
3. Connect an Ethernet cable onto the WAN port of the router.
4. Switch on the modem

Note: In some cases, you might need to talk to your Internet service provider to change the connection types such as USB to Ethernet etc.,

If you were using a DSL modem before using a router

Configure the router with your computer that was connected to your DSL modem.   You can only use the Ethernet port on your modem.

Note: Before starting the setup process, please ensure that you disable all PPPoE software (Ex:- WinPoet/Enternet 300) and SBC Global users must disable all yahoo products what which came with your DSL Package on your computer or you will not be able to get connected to the internet/router.

Enter the IP address of the router (Default 192.168.0.1) on a web browser & enter the username(admin)/password(blank by default)

  • Click Home on top then click WAN on the left side.
  • Click on radio button next to PPP over Ethernet.
  • Beside PPPoE account, enter username (IE username@yourisp.net).


* Some Earthlink users might need to enter ELN/ before their username (IE ELN/username@earthlink.net).

  • Beside PPPoE Password, enter password (from your ISP).
  • Both Primary and Secondary DNS entries should be 0.0.0.0. (unless specified by your ISP)
  • Set Maximum Idle Time to 0
  • Check Auto-Reconnect box.
  • PPPoE Service Name is usually left blank (unless specified by your ISP)
  • Assigned IP Address should be 0.0.0.0 unless specifed by your ISP (Static PPPoE).
  • Leave the MTU at the default setting (1492).

Note: If you get trouble sending or receiving email, or connecting to secure sites such as EBay, banking sites, and Hotmail, lower the MTU in decrements of ten (Ex. 1492, 1482, 1472, etc). AOL DSL+ users must use MTU of 1400.

  • Click Apply and then Restart.

Turn off your DSL modem and router and restart them after sometime.  You should be able to get connected onto the internet.
